Choosing Between On-Site and Off-Site Options
Florida’s unique environment is home to many protected species, including the gopher tortoise, which often impacts land development. If gopher tortoises or their burrows are found on your property, you may need to relocate them before starting any construction. This guide covers the two main relocation options and helps you decide which is right for your project.
What Are My Relocation Options?
- On-Site Relocation
- When it is Suitable: On-site relocation is available for properties with 10 or fewer burrows. This is typically the more affordable choice as it avoids the added cost of third-party recipient sites.
- Requirements: The entire construction area must be fenced with silt fencing, buried 8 inches deep, to keep relocated tortoises from re-entering the construction area. This fence must remain intact throughout construction.
- Additional Conditions: FWC mandates that on-site recipient areas be at least 750 square feet and 10 feet wide, situated in suitable habitat far from roadways and waterways, and without any proposed development within a 30-foot buffer. This setup helps ensure tortoise safety and habitat continuity.
- Trade-Offs: While more cost-effective, on-site relocation requires leaving parts of the land undisturbed, which may limit how much of the property you can use. Additionally, if FWC deems the area unsuitable, they can deny an on-site relocation request.
- Off-Site Relocation
- When it is Required: Off-site relocation is necessary if the property cannot meet on-site requirements or if suitable habitat will not remain after development.
- Process and Cost: Off-site relocation involves transporting tortoises to an FWC-permitted recipient site, usually a sanctuary. This method incurs fees from the recipient site.
- Benefits: Off-site relocation allows unrestricted land use after tortoise removal, providing more flexibility in construction planning.
Key Considerations Before Deciding
Both on-site and off-site relocations require FWC approval and compliance with strict guidelines. If you’re uncertain whether on-site relocation will be possible, a site evaluation by environmental experts can clarify habitat suitability and help in early planning. At IVA Environmental Services, we conduct thorough assessments to determine the best course of action and ensure that all necessary permits are obtained, making the relocation process as smooth as possible.
